As Namibia is so sparsely populated, large areas have been put aside for conservation
purposes. Many of these areas can be found in hard to reach places and as
such tend to be unspoiled.
The
SKELETON COAST PARK, an area reaching north
from Henties Bay for almost 800km, to the Kunene River is one such
area. Although this is a desert, there are many interesting sites to visit
and things to do:
- Popular past times include fishing, sand boarding, quad bike adventures
and ski-boat angling.
- Among the places of interest are the seal colonies
at CAPE CROSS, a couple of shipwrecks stranded on the beach and
Torra / Terrace Bay campsites, the Messum Carter and the varied
bird life.
Another unspoiled area that is a must see, is the CAPRIVI
REGION with the MUDUMO NATIONAL PARK being one of the best.
The far North
offers such wonders as the EPUPA FALLS, RUACANA FALLS, the traditional
HIMBA PEOPLE and the raids at POPA
FALLS.
Other places of interest
are the BRANDBERG with its ancient rock paintings, Twyfelfontein,
the Burnt Mountain, the Organ Pipes, the Hot Springs at Warmquelle, the
Desert Elephants and the WELWITSCHIA MIRABILIS plants.
Further South you
can visit the FISH RIVER CANYON second only to the Grand Canyon for the
depth and size, Duwisib Castle, SOSSUSVLEI, the Quiver Tree Forest at Keetmanshoop,
Wild Horses in the Namib, the town of Lüderitz and its deserted
neighbor, the old mining town KOLMANSKOP.
